This morning, warm sunshine illuminated Corso Casale and the Motovelodromo di Torino from the early hours, which along the 393-meter track hosted the conclusion of several stages of the Giro d’Italia and editions of the Milano Torino in which Coppi and Bartali also participated.
A ribbon of asphalt, enclosed between the structure of the Turin Motovelodromo and the majestic Po, silently accompanied the progress of the 1,300 participants in the Turin event, who rode towards Monferrato to discover territories of considerable landscape and naturalistic interest and to ride along the hillsides with large areas of vineyards cultivated with the care of those who have wisely, for generations, drawn income from these crops. Until passing in front of the Basilica of Castelnuovo Don Bosco, Don Bosco’s birthplace, and returning to Turin to conclude the race in the presence of the extraordinary Basilica of Superga.
A 111 kilometre route that does not feature a long and regular climb, but several steep sections with gradients that can reach double figures, capable of putting any cyclist in difficulty and a dirt track section that marks a return to the past also for what has been the development of the road system in the Turin area.
Right along this exciting journey through the history of Italy and Italian sport, the stories of each of the 1300 participants intersected. Unknown stories, which when told, contribute to narrating the importance of the event desired by Vittorio Mevio, patron of the Gs Alpi.
One above all, that of the winner of the Granfondo, the thirty-year-old from Lodi, Cavenago D’Adda Michele Negri, welcomed at the finish line in Superga by his father Piero in tears. Michele, who in real life is a computer scientist, was at his first participation in the Granfondo Briko Torino and in front of the Basilica of Superga he achieved his first success in the Granfondo. A cyclist who loves long climbs, it is no coincidence that his palmares includes very challenging stage races such as the Haute Route Pyrenees 2022 and the Haute Route Alps 2023.
“I want to congratulate the organizers who have drawn an extraordinary race route – says Michele Negri – even if it is not a route that suits my characteristics. I love long and challenging climbs. For this reason I extended my lead already at the third climb, in an attempt to take away a breakaway or start a long solo action. I found myself alone in the lead, I did not give up and I achieved this victory that I dedicate to my family. My mother and father who always support me”.
Second place for Giovanni Loiscio (Autoricambi Marrone) and third step of the podium occupied by Matteo Raimondi (Team Locca).
Among the women, Roberta Bussone of the Turin battleship Rodman Team led by Marco Pipino, who has already scored several times in this first part of the season, prevailed, preceding Giulia Portaluri (Team De Rosa Santini) and Martina Cavallo (Rock Bike Team).
At the end of the granfondo, the time trial took place, four laps of the Turin Motovelodromo track, to crown the King and Queen of the Turin Motovelodromo, which saw the participation of the first twenty overall and the first ten women. During the final awards ceremony, Paolo Pistono Marketing-Sponsorship and Event Manager of Briko and Giampietro Ferrarese of the Sports and Major Events Staff of the municipality of Turin highlighted the importance of an event like the Granfondo Briko Torino which is placed between the two major professional Tours and brought 1300 cyclists to Turin.
